I thought it was an adult romcom... It was my fault but I was enjoying it at first and then... God I ended up almost crying of how bad this book was

I devoured each chapter of this book. I’m not really a person who reads books that have romance as the primary point but this book was so GOOD. The food descriptions are lovely (I’m a sucker for food related fiction), the characters are lovable, and the romance is something you can really root for.
It left me craving more, & also wanting to try mooncakes.
Classical Recommendation: Ballade of Homeland - Infinity Nikki, FoldEcho

This was sadly so cliche, cringe, and had one too many recycled plots and dialogues that's found in every other romcom book, movie and TV show.
The author added a whole lot of current pop culture references that you get sick of hearing 20% of the way through, not even exaggerating.
Forced myself to finish this with the hopes for cuteness coming soon but it was insta love sadly from beginning to end and it didn't even feel natural.
Definitely felt like the author was trying way very hard to make it a K-drama/C-drama love at first sight type storyline but sadly wasn't executed properly.
Was just overly cliche from start to finish.

While this is YA, this book is held back by not truly wrestling with the conflicts it sets up, instead going for almost cartoonish set ups that are resolved with no lasting consequences (WHY is Theo still friends with Adrian??). However, this was cute and I loved the great food descriptions + exploration of cultural diaspora through food.
fast-paced
This wasnt great, but also not terrible. I think its a problem with the structure. The section about the wedding at the beginning is the best part, which is when the fake dating is actually happening. But the its over incredibly quickly and the book stagnates from there.
Theo and Dylan fall in love with each other instantly from the very beginning, and then get together just as fast. Very insta-love. And I guess the book doesnt have anything else to do beside waiting for the end so it keeps bringing up these little conflicts that show up in a single chapter and are completely resolved by the next one. Nothing ever sticks, only meanders.
We have to get through a bunch of little meaningless problems but we still never get any resolutions for any of what happened at the wedding. Like, why did Theo's dad changed his mind? What happened to the lawsuit? Terri's sister married her ex, whats up with that?
Overall its not great.

As a cisgender gay reader, it reads like a fairy tale. But to BL/M M genre readers, it might have the typical fluffy and imaginative ingredients to entertain them.
