This felt so authentic and rich in culture. I smiled when I knew some of the restaurant tricks having worked in a Chinese restaurant in the past and the descriptions for the food preparation drew me in so much. The narration was really well done, and the characters were fun if a little archtypal. I wish I could have read something like this growing up in high school, but reading it know, I know it's doing something to help heal a little part of my inner child.

This is a YA novel that explores the richness of Chinese culture through food and other traditions with the main characters being two boys from very different backgrounds. I absolutely loved the descriptions of food and culture and family in this book and now I want to learn more! As a person in my thirties, I tend to shy away from the YA genre because it can sometimes be very hard to read about teenagers thinking and doing things I would never think of doing now that I’m thirty-something. However, I enjoyed this narrative and found the main characters as well as side characters pleasant, relatable and funny.
