A beautiful essay collection about the not-so-comfortable parts of life. It's about being alone, but also learning to trust yourself and having hope that things will get better. I admire Lane so much and related to this book a lot. Thank you for having the courage to be vulnerable and share your heart with us, Lane!
After chugging through the rest of "How to Be Alone", I decided that Lane Moore sounds like the type of person who would have hissed at you in the hallway in high school just to appear edgy.
Let me start, this wasn't a fun, comedic romp about learning how to be alone like I expected it would be. It was 200+ pages of Lane talking about how she can't build relationships because of her abuse as a child. Please don't misunderstand, it is not a kid's fault if they're abused. I am sorry to her for her parents mistreatment.
But it is not okay to live your adult life being so bitter that you had to write a book of essays about how priviledged every one else in the world is for having a support system.

I loved and identified with every essay in this book and can even forgive Lane Moore for stanning Jim Halpert who is an abusive and manipulative bully of a fictional character because sometimes we can’t help who we love.

I’m so thankful for this book.
I enjoyed this, though it is painful to read about someone hurting so much ... but I feel like the title and cover are misleading as to what the book is actually about.
In this audiobook Lane Moore discusses what it's like to be completely alone. While I didn't relate exactly to every experience (Which no one will ever relate to everything in any book) I really understood how she felt. To feel alone in a world where everyone seems to be happy and surrounded by a ton of people who care for them. When she started to discuss how heartbreaking it is to be a hopeless romantic, well I haven't related to something more. Being a hopeless romantic looks like fun, but its really hard. I recommend this book to anyone who has ever felt truly alone.
This was a pretty great memoir which gave me a little more insight into a life experience that I don’t share but want to be better at acknowledging and supporting!
3.5 and rounding to 4. I’m really glad I read this memoir/book of essays. I think there’s something for everyone here. It was great on audio and it was a good listen especially during the holidays which family dynamics can be tough.
