“We are not only one thing. Monster or man." I completely lost myself in this book with the Iceland setting and the layers of personal and family trauma. We follow Agnes as she tries to uncover the truth of her family's famous but tragic history and it was both thrilling and heartbreaking.
It's one of those books that's going to sit with me for a while and I enjoyed every second of it. I look forward to reading more of Melissa's work!

I enjoyed this book, but more for the prose and writing style than the actual mystery which fell a little flat.
Agnes is a young Californian woman of Icelandic descent, struggling after a major accident and the death of her grandfather. Knowing there were grisly, unsolved murders in the background she heads to Iceland to see what she can find out and be interviewed for a podcast. As she arrives, a local young woman goes missing.
The bulk of the story is about the new girl's disappearance and Agnes' family story seems almost like an afterthought, but the descriptions are emotive and the Icelandic backdrop cold and unforgiving.
Ultimately not a lot of surprises in this, but an enjoyable read

The Lost House is atmospheric and well-written, with a chilling Icelandic setting and a layered mystery. While the premise is strong, the pacing drags in places and some characters feel underdeveloped. A solid read, but not unforgettable.
