This definitely would've been a 5 star read had the last part of the book (1/3rd maybe?) been edited for brevity. Maybe that way, it wouldn't have had to hammer the point in quite so thoroughly and repetitively to the point I was skimming pages. Having said that, this is a great, big, enjoyable read about a small town guy that makes it in the big city. More or less anyway, just with all the fantasy elements. There are other reviews that will do this book justice, so I'll just say that if you are looking for a book you can really sink your teeth into, and you are a fan of work related competence porn, AND you love fantasy, I can highly recommend.

Characters: 5 stars
Heart: 5 stars
Tight storytelling: um, well, a book can’t always have it all.
This book is sooo repetitive, characters have nearly the same conversation at multiple points during the plot, and yet… I still really enjoyed it.

I was a little startled at how big this book was when it arrived from the library. It was immediately engrossing though. I was lost in the world and happy to be. What a treat.

DNF at ~55%. Started wonderfully, first part is almost as great as Goblin Emperor. But it is far too long and became far too repetitive. The romance sprung from nowhere and seemed to only exist to disavow the ho yay between the MCs. Also, this book really, really needs an editor.
