Amazing, wow. I love Elizabeth Zott. Might be one of the best female characters I’ve ever read, she is such an interesting wonderful, smart woman. I love this taking place in the 60s and the social commentary provided. The whole story was really well done and wraps up perfectly. I am both shocked and delighted this is the author’s first and only novel- what a knockout. A beautiful wonderful story. So many themes and topics explored- women in STEM, atheism vs theism, becoming a mother when you never wanted to become one, the dog that can save you, exercise, homosexuality vs religious zealots, and so much more.

4 stars out of 5 because why tf did we spend 0 time reflecting on the fact that Elizabeth’s pregnancy/becoming a mother was against every value she had for herself?

Set the table, kids. Your mother needs a moment to herself.

On my reread of Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus, I found myself falling in love with the characters again. This time around, I especially appreciated how the chemistry element wove with cooking, giving the story both charm and depth. The characters felt richer on a second read, and I enjoyed them immensely. And 6:30 is still the best character, I love that we get glimpses of his thoughts, which add a unique and heartfelt perspective to the book. I also loved the aspect of feminism in it and that Elizabeth Zott was unapologetically herself.
Overall, it’s a clever, warm, and utterly memorable story that only gets better with a reread.
