Welp.
As we all know, Riley Hart can be hit or miss for most. For some reason I find myself loving some books and feeling like I could do without other books. This was a book I could have done without.
It wasn’t bad in the slightest but the entire premise of the book (set up in the first 25%) felt so forced. The “bet” didn’t even make sense and felt more like they were just trying to find a way to squeeze Atlas into it. Like what was even the point other than to further the plot?

THE STEP BET is the first book in the Peach State Stepbros series.
Troy and Atlas were thrown together when they were fourteen. Troy's mom marrying Atlas's dad. Neither wanted to be in that situation but Troy was trying while Atlas appears to be holding a grudge more often than not. They both are attending the same college and have a competitive streak a mile wide with each other. When one bet becomes all they can think about and maybe all the frustrations they have with each other isn't because of hate after all.
These characters had such great chemistry. The banter back and forth, the sweetness when they finally let it show and they were explosive together. I enjoyed the bit of family drama and my heart broke for both of them when they finally let themselves be vulnerable.
These authors are a great duo together and I can't wait for more!
I was given a free copy of this book.

This had the opportunity to be way more than it was.
Stepbrother? Check.
A bet? Check.
Decent sex scenes? Check.
What's missing is the feeling. There should have been more angst regarding their situation. The "I want to fxck the son of the woman who helped ruin my life" was brushed upon but it should have gone deeper. There should have been more rage-banging. If you're going to set up a family dynamic like theirs there are a lot of steps to go through before the eventual hea.
It should have been hate (lots of rage banging in this stage) > mistrust > a tentative truce (where inner feelings start to be shared) > tentative like > like > tentative love > love.
Instead, it feels like we skipped a lot of exploration to rush to the hea.

Really enjoyed this book, very low angst and a good side plot of family drama that was not too much. Loved how obsessed the two were with each other - can't wait to read the next in the series
