2.75 - eh

This book follows stepbrothers Atlas and Troy. Their parents got together when Atlas's dad cheated on his mom, and she died soon after. So there was never really a good basis for their relationship in the first place, and since they became stepbrothers at 14, they've always butted heads.

At the same time, their relationship means that they know each other a lot better than other people know them. And they've kept the spirit of their relationship alive through things like silly bets.

So when Troy fails his thermo exam, Atlas wants to help motivate him. He makes a wager. The terms? If Troy gets less than an A, Atlas gets several hours of his time (which he is planning on using for a volunteering event). If Troy gets that A, then Atlas is going to give him a blowjob.

Troy is sufficiently motivated, but doesn't think that Atlas will actually follow through with his side of the wager, given that Atlas is 1) his stepbrother and 2) straight as a pole. But Atlas does follow through, and the blowjob serves as an explosion to their relationship and their feelings toward each other.

I liked the idea of this book, but the execution wasn't my favorite. I liked the tension leading up to that first blowjob, but after that, there wasn't any. And with a book about such a taboo relationship, there really should be.

The pacing wasn't my favorite. Again, after the blowjob, the progression of Troy and Atlas's relationship was way too fast to really get invested in it. Like why are they falling so fast? Why are they thinking about getting tattoos with each other's names when they haven't even been dating a month? Bruh.

The pacing of the sex scenes was far too quick for my liking as well. I don't feel like the authors took their time to, again, build the necessary tension to make a sex scene good.

One thing I did like about this book was that it addressed addiction and how difficult that mental illness is for everyone involved. I also liked how Atlas and Troy's parents got together under uncomfortable circumstances (infidelity); I think that added some texture and interest to the story.

Overall, this book is good for people who like very fast-paced books, taboo relationships like between stepbrothers, and more difficult topics/relationships addressed like addiction and infidelity. Wasn't the book for me, though.
