This wasn't it. I got 70% in and I couldn't take the plot holes. It's a good concept but the characters didn't have depth and the world building became shallow after Hanne returned.
This just didn't work for me, at all.

Interesting plot and complex characters. I think I would've liked more world-building since I had a few unanswered questions, but I was still really impressed with what was shown. Can't wait for the second book!

I wasn't sure what to expect with Jodi Meadows' latest adventure, but it was not this and I was not disappointed! The story was darker and more dramatic than I expected. While the characters are interesting, there isn't much by way of humor. Instead, this is a story about betrayal, deception, secrets, and challenging choices.

The characters are all very well developed and layered. Nightrender is a powerful warrior devoted to her cause, yet displays certain vulnerabilities when it comes to her own heart. Rune is sweet as can be yet also strong enough to put his kingdom first. Hanne is absolutely ruthless and while I wouldn't want to hang out with her, I definitely find her compelling.

The world and its magic system are imaginative and unique. There were a lot of terms, but I didn't find anything to be confusing. I really enjoyed the way Meadows allowed her imagination to take hold. I also really liked the action scenes, of which there were plenty. The ending also had a cliffhanger that made me eager to see what would come next.

I'd been looking forward to this book and am glad it met my expectations. I have so many questions and want to see more of these characters interacting (especially Nightrender and Hanne, which would be legendary). There are great foundations here and I can't wait to see them come to fruition. Recommended for readers who like dark YA fantasy with action, gods, and treachery!

A great start to a new fantasy trilogy that ends in a cliffhanger. Definitely a unique plot that contains a love/hate/user triangle that allows the reader to get insight into all three of the main characters. A highly recommended suggestion from a student who loves fantasy.

So disappointed with this book. The idea was interesting, but poorly executed, with a romance that frankly could've done without as I felt no chemistry from anyone.
