The Illustrated Book of Sayings: Curious Expressions from Around the World by Ella Frances Sanders

'The Illustrated Book of Sayings' by Ella Francis Sanders is a collection of odd phrases from around the world. It showed me that English phrases like 'the cat is out of the bag' are probably just as strange to non-English speakers as some of these were to me.
From the French "To Pedal in Sauerkraut" to the Aromanian "One Flower Doesn't Make the Spring," I enjoyed all of this. For each phrase, there is an illustrated page with the original language and an approximate English translation. There is also an explanation of the phrase, what it's English equivalent might be, and and a history of where it might have originated. I learned that the Farsi phrase "I will eat your liver" is actually a term of endearment like "You are my heart." I'll leave the rest for you to discover.
This is a book for word nerds, like me. There are 52 sayings in the book, so it's a quick enough read. I think each phrase is in a unique language. I found it utterly charming and I feel like something like this helps the world feel more familiar. Buy a copy for your word nerd. They will thank you for such a lovely book.

In this book, we find 52 proverbs and expressions from all over the world. I love seeing so many different languages and being able to learn a bit about them. For each quote there's also a very beautiful image, illustrated by the author, showing the literal meaning of the words. It's absolutely adorable!

Avevo già sfogliato il primo libro di Ella Frances Sanders, quindi appena ho potuto ho letto anche questo. Non me ne sono pentita per niente: anche questa volta mi ha aperto un mondo. Dal giapponese "mettersi un gatto in testa" al cinese "cavallo cavallo, tigre tigre", sono uno più assurdo e affascinante dell'altro.

I received this as a gift from my Italian friend who knows that I am completely amazed and enthralled by languages and strange untranslatable words and idioms. I really enjoyed this and even chuckled at some of the Romanian expressions they explained which made me realise how silly my mother tongue can sound to others. Overall, this is a great gift for the polyglot/ linguist in your life!

I loved this as much as I loved Lost in Translation. Ella's illustrations are amazing! I'm so glad I bought myself copies of both her books!
