I found this an utter disappointment. Don't get me wrong, it's still enjoyable and I still liked the puzzles we see, especially as they start to come together.

But the ending is a complete mess. I didn't feel that it adequately explained what was going on, or resolve a lot of questions I had. And it's so disappointing, as I loved book one so much.

The dual timelines are great and getting to see more of the morningstars is a nice touch.

Honestly not sure what else I can add that isn't massively spoilery, and I'm still just sad this wasn't what I wanted.

This series as a whole probably gets closer to a 3.5 from me. I did like much of the way things wound up, but some details I felt needed more attention. Still a good series.

huh. i don't know... this one just didn't have the magic for me that the earlier books did. it was so sprawling, in so many ways, and i'm not sure i even completely ::get:: what happened. i'd love to reread the whole trilogy now that they're all out!

I really loved this series, and I would highly recommend it to all lovers of the middle grade genre.
I'm a sucker for a competition or a puzzle, and I thought this was really well done. I think there's certainly a lot to discuss about this story, and I honestly don't know that I've wrapped my head around the entire thing, but I very much enjoyed the ride, and I will continue to think about this series. I love Laura Ruby's writing, and I'm excited to read more from her.

I’m not sure how to rate this book. I loved so many things about this series. The world-building, of course, and the characters, and all the little mysterious details...but it wasn’t wrapped up in a satisfying way for me. I’m okay with a few unanswered questions—it’s always fun to leave something up to the reader—but this series promised too many answers that were never addressed. So. Many. So, five stars for almost everything; two stars for the disappointing end.
