very slow book, especially at the beginning, but i enjoyed it anyway. Robin Hobb’s characters are so wonderfully written and the dynamics we got to see in this third book were even better crafted than in the previous installments. i absolutely loved the “quest” element that was very dominant in the story, and i found the ending flawless. i will absolutely be reading the other RotE books.

Wow. I really loved this whole trilogy but it was a challenging read. Fitz never really catches a break and even though it all makes sense in the story, it's hard to see him face betrayal after betrayal, and lose so much. After I finished, my first thought was "that was one of the best series that I will never ever read again". However I will say the books are worth reading. Fitz is an interesting character and he's very consistent in his behavior. I think my favorite character aside from Fitz is probably Nighteyes or the Fool. I saw there were more books that follow the Fool and I definitely plan on reading those someday (once I emotionally recover from reading this series).

This book was good but also not great.  The beginning of the novel starts straight away after the events of books 2 ending and it’s a great start to the novel. Fits is going through ALOT. However the rest of the novel (like 500 pages) is of him on a journey and there is not much destination happening. And THEN for the last 100 pages we finally get some actual action and magic but the ending is over very quickly. The final ‘battle’ is very short and not very detailed. Also why does every new female chapter Hobb introduces want to sleep with Fitz. they were not the most well written characters, especially after how brilliantly written Krettian and Lady Patience are in the novels (would have loved to see more of their journey in the novel as they are bad bitched that don’t mess around).
HOWEVER, saying all of that what we did get of the magic of the world was very interesting. The relationship Fitz has with Nighteyes and the Fool, chefs kiss. Would literally die for those two. The dynamic that these 3 characters had with each was definitely one of the most enjoyable parts of this book.
Overall this I think was the weakest novel in the trilogy in regard to plot, the writing and pros however is definitely the strongest out of the three.
I would still definitely recommend this series as it is mostly very enjoyable and i think sets up the stage for the following novels in the world.
