I’m not sure how I feel about this book. It wasn’t as gripping of a fantasy as I wanted it to be, but it was interesting. There was a lot of time devoted to really defining the magic, but the explanations would sometimes come at strange times which had me wondering if it was lazy storytelling, lazy translation, or a mix of both.

This is the first book in a four part series and didn’t nicely wrap up the main plot of this book, but didn’t really leave on a cliff-hanger either. Because I walked away from this one neither loving nor hating it, I’m going to give it one more book before deciding if I want to finish the series or not.

A very adventurous, whimsical, and unique world. A refreshing read that I’m excited to see where the next book leads, though I do hope the word lugubrious isn’t used quite so much.
