A slow, but tense build up that makes for an interesting set up for the rest of the series. I really enjoyed Ophelia as a character which made it really easy to get into the story. She’s stoic, clever, naive, bold, and trusting. Her character thrust into unfamiliar territory full of deadly court politics really makes the bulk of the story. I can’t wait to read the next in the series.

My favourite book serie ever, I need to write a review for it one day, La Passe-Miroir changed my life, it's more culturally significant to me than my own birth

Il me laisse totalement perplexe.

The story is set in a world where humanity is divided into isolated family groups, each with unique powers inherited from their ancestors. Yes, incest, but that’s just the beginning!

We follow a clumsy, socially awkward girl who is forced into an arranged marriage, and things go only downhill from there. I was exhausted at times - the story includes offhand comments about rape, on-page torture, bellitlement, and repeatedly strips the heroine of her agency, leaving her overwhelmed and out of her depth.

While I approached the book as a kind of burlesque satire, I found it lacking in both plot and character development, which made it difficult to truly enjoy.  Everything is very over the top, as heroine herself puts it in book 2.

I think this would have worked better as an adult novel, allowing it to fully embrace its sheer craziness.

Excellent world building, so creative and interesting. Gave me Studio Ghibli vibes. Strong character development with a variety of interesting characters you actually want to know more about.
