Oof this book took alot to get though and I found myself skipping over whole pages just to get back to the plot.
The concept of the book is interesting and it has some really imaginative theories and locations. I can see why alot of people loved it but damn I picked up this book hoping for a fun fiction about cursed books and the mysteries around them and was met but paragraph after paragraph of science theory.

Overall this book was well written, exciting, thought provoking, and creative. A fresh new take on the trope of inter-dimensional adventure. I found that the overarching question of “what is the nature of reality?” was presented and attempted an answer in a fairly approachable, digestible, and generally coherent way; though at times the book did feel as if the headiness of the theme was getting in the way of itself.
The author did a solid job of creating the main character, Ariel, as a dark, moody, social outcast, though at times it felt as though he was leaning too far into that, to the point that she felt a bit unrealistic or even annoying at times.
I found the ending of the novel to be a good, satisfying resolution in terms of the themes, but it felt slightly abrupt in terms of the actual story. The scenes where she goes into the minds of Abbie Lathrop and then Lumas felt like they came and went without much fanfare, despite most of the book’s plot building up to those scenes. Plus, there was no attempt at resolving what the “real” world looked like after she convinced Lumas to not write the book. Her staying in the troposphere at the end felt like a cop out.

I wish I had waited a bit to read this because I finished PopCo earlier this month and I kept noticing certain themes come up in both, which made me feel like I was learning a lot more about the author than I would have liked. There were so many interesting ideas in this but I didn’t connect with the characters, and the concepts were often used for philosophical discussion which I wasn’t too keen on. I’d still recommend it, but not to everyone
