Charming fantasy series
fast-paced

I really enjoyed this sequel to The Left-Handed Booksellers of London. His Old Kingdom series is still my favourite, but these two are a close second.

I am absolutely loving this series. A brilliant blend of urban fantasy, folklore, spycraft and action.

I put off reading this for weeks because, though I liked the first book, it was quite slow in the middle, and I knew that if this one turned out to be the same way it would put me in a reading slump for days. As it turned out, there was nothing to worry about. It only took a paragraph or two before I was reminded why I enjoy Nix's writing style and voice so much, and this book was a good installment in the series, surpassing the first in terms of pacing by a long shot.

I also love that Susan is not our typical run-of-the-mill Chosen One, who simply lays down and accepts the stressful, dangerous consequences of her Chosen-One-Ness. More than once, when faced with some awesome power she could wield, she says, "No, thank you," and continues primly on with the semblance of ordinary life she's managed to preserve. It's kind of refreshing to see in a character like that.
