A bit slower than the first book, but it dives deeper into the character development of Susan and Merlin, and the complexity of Susan's relationship with her heritage and the Booksellers. The series, overall, is a wonderful and creative take on the "masquerade" trope.
If I had a list of my favorite books from Garth Nix, this would rank somewhere around the middle. If you're typically a fan of Nix's magical and creative work, I would recommend this.

I loved The Left-Handed Booksellers of London, and I was hoping the latest would be even more character development. But I was left disappointed. There was little development of the relationship between Merlin and Susan. And little development of Susan and her father.
Even after spending a large part of the book focusing on how her powers beginning to develop, it’s wrapped up with a paragraph or two. We don’t even read about Susan’s visit with her father.
Overall I was very let down by this book.

So disappointed after the fun of the first. I learned more about British two-way radios and guns than the actual story

What a fun book! I may have enjoyed it more if I had read the first book more recently / read the book in longer sessions, but I really do love this world that Nix has created. The characters are so enjoyable to read!

Loved this, it was fun and just what I wanted to read.
I really enjoyed all the mentions of other authors, particularly the childhood ones.
I hope there's another book in the series
