I need more Viv. (Gimme a Viv adventure dammit!!!!)
I need less of Susan trying to fight EVERYTHING. (seriously, I get resisting your destiny but, christ she is exhausting.)
And I need Merlin to just keep being his best self. (He is my sweet baby and he deserves good things, and honesty... his relationship with Susan is just not convincing me.)
Susan resists her role in this whole story, and is whittled down to a very whiney character and she honestly treats Merlin like crap. Merlin wants to see her and she has dumbed their relationship to scheduled days. He, who has been in this business far longer than Susan's known of its existence, tries to keep her as safe as he can - because all she does is complain that she doesn't want to be apart of this, and when the time comes for her to really be afraid and need protection to yells at him. Susan doesn't deserve to be "The Chosen One" Character, she hasn't made me care enough about her, to believe that she can be anything more than a student.
Her reluctance in book one was believable and is why I was excited to see her grow into her role, but it takes too damn long, and when she finally has her big moment, it feels forced and unbelievable, because she tried to arm wrestle every twist and turn in her cowardly favor.
I'll still be around for whatever book comes next, but my expectations will be far lower, honestly I'm a bit disappointed with how different my experiences have been with book one and two.
Fingers crossed for a book three improvement.

I usually very much enjoy Nix's books and characters. Even though very much enjoying the 1st in this series, this one was a bit of a miss for me.
The relationships between the characters felt a little off or awkward. I felt Susan and Merlin had both taken a little backwards step in their development.
But as always the atmosphere, magic and pacing were excellent. The mystery, clever magic and conclusion were my reasoning for continuing. As I was intrigued with what new Old World Sovereign would appear and require from the booksellers.
A smooth and easy read for readers looking to continue this series.
