Plot or Character Driven: Plot

This duology was a very interesting read, and I loved the way the world was set up and how it was crafted, such an interesting and wonderful world to become invested in!

The characters, setting, magic system and ideas are all so well crafted and so lovely to read!

Books, maps, Bath, London, and magic, all set in an alternate 1980s; this book is very clearly for me. The second in the series (I really loved the first) this is atmospheric, funny, suspenseful, fun, and with a fascinating world of ancient sovereigns and magical booksellers. I’m looking forward to the next book in the series.

“This is the book for anyone who has ever said “I don’t read fantasy”” (SMH)

Absolutely true and worth testing if you too don’t read fantasy.

Didn't enjoy this quite as much as the first book, but still love the world and the characters and look forward to book 3.

Read this 2nd installment in Nix's weird alternate London world on the train.

Very enjoyable! I was captivated the entire time. There was a lot of chase scenes and action. Basically the whole plot was about protagonist Susan trying to evade death by a twisted godlike creature who could control stone.

The Left-Handed and Right-Handed Booksellers got involved again to support/tease/protect Susan and their shenanigans were laugh worthy. They are very much the dysfunctional family.

Highlights for me:
- Susan Arkshaw is a believable heroine. She has to take time to sit down and freak out after some of the action, sleep, etc. She's not the kind of heroine who suddenly becomes confident and comfortable with the Weird happening around and to her. She needs time to process and lean on her friends and family.
- The sassy Booksellers taking over random hotels and tea houses in London as their "crisis rooms" while they're trying to solve the case and ordering tons of tea and cake as usual.
- Merlin's tendency to "borrow" other people's vehicles and then get them all smashed up when he drives them wildly.

Good stuff! I highly recommend this read.

Not as good as the first one. A bit like the author felt he needed to do a sequel.
