Stress is the leading cause of death these days, so I force myself to stay calm.
Throughout my life, I've heard that what makes us human is the way we love, the way we create, the way we think and invent and destroy - it makes us stand out and it makes us better than other life forms, and especially other things that simply exist. But Hard Copy challenges that notion; maybe not in the sense that things are as important as we are, but that we are all equally unimportant. Only the way we deal with that fact is what makes or breaks us.
On the surface, this story feels like a prolonged nervous breakdown of an unnamed narrator with childhood trauma, an "allergy to exertion", and possibly a whole plethora of other mental health problems. Slightly below the surface, it's about the misery of being a cog in the machine of corporatism. And even deeper than that, it's about how in this day and age we're all one human connection away from either survival or complete annihilation.
Hard Copy will be relatable to many, whether they talk to their printers or not, because it so precisely captures the experience that millions of people share - of getting up, and doing the same meaningless shit every day. It's just a question of whether you'll continue on your autopilot until you drop dead, or you'll use this novel (as well as plenty of other instances of literature, film and art) to realize life is meant to be lived, and to make a conscious effort to cultivate joy and connections.

as someone who, as a kid, personified all my blankets in my bedroom and gave them individual names and backstories and personality traits, i felt very seen by the main character in this book

A moving, funny and relatable reflection on class, mental illness and belonging. A sympathetic and introspective protagonist. Loved it!
