About a Kiss by Caroline Linden focuses on two of the secondary characters from book one in the Desperately Seeking Duke historical romance series. This short story should be read after book one. Kit Lawrence accepts a job as Maximilian St. James’ valet while Jennie Hickson is the maid to the new Mrs. St. James.

Kit and Jenny are engaging characters with chemistry, but there isn’t a lot of time for depth in the short story. However, by reading About a Rogue first, everything flows well. There are references back to events in that book and how they are viewed by Kit and Jenny.

The romance seems to develop quickly in the short story, but the time frame is actually longer than it appears. Overall, this was entertaining and provided both a different perspective of events in book one and a new romance. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

Opinions are mine alone and are not biased in any way. Publication date was October 5, 2020.

Nothing special

This short story is just ok. There’s just not that much there. They see each other. They like each other. And if you’ve read “About a Rogue” there are some reminders of the main story. But there’s just not much to this story.

About A Kiss is a cute companion novella to About A Rogue, which you should read first. About A Kiss is the servants-eye-view of the employer's romance and had a sweet romance of its own.

Rating: ⭐⭐
Genre: Historical Romance

Christopher Lawrence (Kit) doesn't anticipate working as Maximilian St. James's valet for very long. He meets Jennie Hickson, the new Mrs. St. James' maid, and all of a sudden, he wishes to spend the remainder of his life next to her.

This is a short story that is supposed to be a companion to a bigger series. Perhaps it is unfair to evaluate a companion book as a standalone. However, I will treat this short story as a standalone book since I haven't read any of the main series. Despite the brief length of the novel, the author squandered time by giving us a backstory, and the second half of the book built the relationship too quickly to be enjoyable. I didn't sense any chemistry between the two main characters, which is crucial for any romance tale to be convincing.
