Listened to the audiobook, and it was difficult to get through. This book could have used a LOT of editing and some fact checking. It jumps around in time and can be repetitive, so it feels disjointed and hard to follow.
My heart goes out to Matthew Perry for his lifelong battle with addiction. It is a devastating disease, and a lot of what he writes about his experience with treatment shows how much the treatment system fails even very privileged individuals. It sounds like methadone and Suboxone didn’t work well for him, but they are lifesaving medications, and his claims about how long someone should/shouldn’t be on it are unnecessary if not harmful.
I did enjoy learning more about his journey into acting and his experience on Friends, and applaud his courage in sharing his story.

To all who called this book repetitive: I once read an interview with the Iron Claw director, Sean Durkin, about why he decided to exclude Chris Von Erich from the movie. He said it was "due to the repetitive nature of his story and the potential for adding more tragedy to the already deeply tragic narrative." So basically a movie about Von Eric family, made a conscious decision to exclude one of the sons who committed suicide because two other brothers in the movie already committed suicide. And it would be too much for the viewers.
This is an autobiography, and Matthew Perry's life is all about drugs, drinking, women and of course Friends. If it's repetitive for you, just think about what he went through in his 54 years of life.

Don't really like him as a person, but I appreciate the raw honesty

Personally I don't rate memoirs so I won't be rating this. I found this on libby and decided to give it a shot. Listening to this after Matthew Perry's death was honestly an experience that I don't think I would have gotten before he died. His life was so depressing and I really felt for him the whole time I was listening to this. I do kind of think this was kind of repetitive, it literally felt like we were in a never ending circle, but it was also his life and if I thought it was repetitive I can only imagine how it felt for him to live it.
I don't feel comfortable rating this given the circumstances. I will say it was quite shocking in that it was a very honest and unflattering portrait of himself - certainly not one of those celebrity memoirs where they are painting themselves in a favourable light. I listened to the audio and to me it sounded as if he was slurring and affected by drugs at the time though maybe it's just the sound of someone who has put themselves through the wringer to this extent. It is also a very good reminder that fame and wealth and all the trappings of success don't make you happy. Ultimately just a really sad story.
Story wasn't written well. Major victim mindset
