Matthew Perry’s book is a heartfelt journey through his life, offering a rare and deeply personal look at the man behind the iconic Chandler Bing. Despite the fame and success, Perry’s transparency about his own struggles is both raw and inspiring. His ability to make others laugh while grappling with his inner demons is a testament to his resilience and dedication to his craft.
Throughout the book, you can’t help but wonder how he managed to maintain that infectious smile despite the challenges he faced. It’s a reminder that we may never truly know what someone is battling behind their public persona. Perry’s story serves as a powerful reminder to treat people with kindness and love, acknowledging that we all have our battles, regardless of how we appear on the outside.
As a fan who grew up watching him on “Friends,” I share your gratitude for the laughter he brought into our lives. Perry’s book encourages us to cherish our friends and family, to hold them close, and to support them in their own journeys. His life experiences underscore the importance of following one’s dreams, even when fear tries to hold us back. In the end, we can take away the message that it’s okay to be scared when taking chances, and it’s in those moments that we can truly grow.
“Rip Chandler” indeed, but Matthew Perry’s legacy, both on and off the screen, continues to inspire us to embrace life, laughter, and the pursuit of our dreams while treating others with the love and kindness they deserve.

Reading this as he’s already passed on while on drugs, while he constantly writes how he’s grateful to still be alive and how many times he almost wasn’t, is even more heartbreaking than this autobiography already is. He was a soldier and went through so much, and will always be an inspiration for wanting to make things right again and again.
'Friends' and Chandler Bing always made me laugh my heart out. When I'm feeling down, watching 'Friends' is like a mood-changer for me. It's like having good friends cheering me up. Chandler Bing's character is super important to me, and he's my favorite in 'Friends.' He's like a Hero !!!
Now I just completed reading this book and writing this review with a heavy heart. He went through a lot of pain and was often left alone, even as a little kid traveling on a plane. Being abandoned by his parents at such a young age had a big impact on him. These tough experiences led him to struggle with addiction, affecting his future.
Throughout his life, Matthew lacked the support he needed. Even though there were people around him, addiction kept him from enjoying the life he deserved.
“I'm Chandler Bing, I make jokes when I'm uncomfortable†- Matthew Perry

It’s weird reviewing an autobiography, especially by a non-writer. After reading the reviews of this, I had to double-check to make sure it wasn’t rewritten because I truly don’t understand the criticisms.
Some of the main critics I’ve seen revolve around Matthew’s constant finger pointing and whiny attitude. I can be certain most of those criticisms were from those who didn’t finish the book. Matthew Perry does an excellent job of walking us through his thought process as the events happened, explaining what traumas led him to begin his dependency and how he healed after. He begins blaming others, sure, but he is chronologically telling the story of how he came to acknowledge his privilege, both that led to his spiraling and saved his life through exclusive medical care, etc., and eventually learning to take accountability for his actions.
The timeline does become repetitive as he briefly refers to future events and later expands on them when they occur in the timeline. This can be confusing if one isn’t following too intently, but generally does make sense within its context.
I listened to the audiobook, which, for any autobiography from a non-writer, is my preferred method. Where the writer might lack the nuances in writing tone and emotion, their voice and inflections carry. In this book, Matthew conveys an astounding amount of heartbreaking emotion and levity that I don’t feel would have been nearly as effective if I had read it.
This book truly is his greatest performance. May he rest easy.
