I remember having this book read to me when I was younger, and I remember loving it and the rest of this series. However I had not retained any memory of the sequence of events that takes place - apart from a few very minute details. This book is brilliantly written, it pulls you into this world that is so similar to ours but also so very different. I couldn’t help but love Lyra, she is such a dynamic character and while she is so young she is intelligent beyond her years. Also the way the the characters speak - you are transported to this place and time and the difference in class between characters is evident in the way in which they communicate with each other which I love. All of this is reason enough to read this book and i have so many favourite details (armoured bears, adventure, the beautiful and desperate way that Lyra searches for a meaning in the big bad world that she inhabits) but the element of the deamons really is the best part in my opinion. This creature (who changes shape until puberty) that is your best friend and an extension of your soul - gosh - it just gets me. Give this book a read it’s really one of my favourites of all time.
