In the movie they left out several things from the books, the obvious being the adults (Mrs Coulter and Lord Asriel being very bad people. People probably took the Magesterium as being like the Catholic Church (all powerful an what they say is law), and having Daemons instead of Souls as being anti-religious. Find, I found the plot slow in many plots and sometimes tedious and the characters a bit 2-dimensional - not really an impressive story. Ever so often the characters had to stop for some reason and explain things in long speeches which was tiring. I will get around to reading the other books later to see how things on fold.

I'm not sure yet if I favorite it enough to put it on the shelf with my other ones, but this book was EXTREMELY BEAUTIFUL! The fact that they have personal soul daemons is an extremely beautiful concept and I can't wait to see if Lyra grows up in the series and what Pantaliamon becomes set upon in his form, if ever he does.
I admit, I watched the movie before I read the book, but I had watched the movie back in 2007, whereas I just now was able to get my hands on the book.
For a long time, I was not allowed to read this because of the "religious intolerance" theme of the book, and my parents didn't allow me to read it. However, reading this first novel, I read none of that. In fact, I read a lot of what I agreed with about Christianity in the first place, which is what made me choose a Pagan path.
I will be reading the next in the series. The book was much more wonderful than its movie counterpart, in fact I'm disappointed I fell in love with the movie such a long time ago. It did its book no justice.
*PERSONAL OPINION* As for the fact that if this series does indeed have a Christianity spurn among its pages that's it has grown popular for, all the more better that I'd like to read it. It's about time there were books that were against Christians, as there have been books against witches and how evil we are. Just throwing that opinion out there, it has nothing to do with the book itself.

Truly exceptional world building and one of the most unique magical systems I’ve ever read. Lyra may be one of my favorite young protagonists I’ve ever read; she’s brave, she’s afraid of what’s to come, she’s a leader, she’s naive, she’s still just a kid, she’s a fearsome warrior. You can almost see her. I’m amazed at how emotionally nuanced and involved this story is, and the pacing - it’s just an incredibly well rounded story that’s written very purposefully and very effectively.
