Will written and enjoyable, but I now understand why some people wanted it banned. It's not even atheist it's anti-religion. I'm strong enough in my faith to still enjoy good writing though.

It felt very… middle school/high school. Adults who listen to children no questions asked? Uh-huh, sure. Lyra is very whiny and a know it all. I love her demon, Pan, though. He is quite precious. I also love Yurik (could be spelling them wrong, I did the audiobook). I feel like his story could have been an entire story by itself that could have been more interesting.
SPOILER!
Lyras bestie died in her arms and there’s no emotional reaction whatsoever? Seriously?
I read this because it was a bargain for a coworker to read TOG lmao

really loved the concept of daemons. and I have a soft spot for fantasy which is kinda close to reality.
that being said, I do wish I'd read this book when I was in my (early) teens. would had enjoyed it then more.

I went into The Golden Compass with high hopes, and while I did enjoy parts of it, my experience was a bit mixed overall.
The world-building is definitely impressive — the concept of dæmons and the alternate universe is so unique and imaginative. There were chapters that completely pulled me in, and I could really appreciate Pullman’s ambition in creating such a complex world.
That said, I found myself getting bored at times. Certain chapters felt slow or wandered in ways that made it hard for me to stay engaged, and I struggled to fully understand the point or direction of the story in some places.
As for Lyra, the main character, I had a complicated relationship with her. She’s bold and resourceful, which I appreciated, but she also came across as annoying at times, making it harder for me to fully connect with her journey.
Overall, I liked the book and I can see why it’s so beloved, but I didn’t always feel hooked. It had moments of brilliance mixed with sections that dragged for me. If you love detailed world-building and don’t mind a slower pace in parts, this might be a great fit.
