An all time classic

I LOVED this book. It is so beautifully written. I love the effortless way this world, so like ours and yet not, is described. I love the characters. I love how even though we live in a world where humans don’t have daemons (spirit animals connected to our souls) we can feel, and empathise with, the anguish and horror felt when a human soul is disconnected from its daemon. That is some seriously clever writing from Pullman. I have the trilogy in one book but decided to plow through a few others before continuing with book 2. I can’t wait to see what Lyra gets up to next though. She is one feisty, brave and yet so damn real little kid.

Lovely to hear this favourite childhood adventure read by the author. The depth of the book meant I enjoyed it even more reading as an adult, as there were elements beyond my comprehension as a child when I first enjoyed it.

SO SO GOOD!!! i remember this very vaguely from when i was a kid but i didn’t appreciate how amazing the writing and storytelling is

lyra is such a little BRAT but she loves everyone so much and i SOBBED in my car (audio book) when lord azriel literally murdered her childhood bestie while he was IN HER ARMS!!!! this is the lord azriel and mrs coulter hate club over here

“There’s plenty of folk as’d like to have a lion as a dæmon and they end up with a poodle. And till they learn to be satisfied with what they are, they’re going to be fretful about it. Waste of feeling, that is.”

“It was such a strange tormenting feeling when your dæmon was pulling at the link between you; part physical pain deep in the chest, part intense sadness and love. And she knew it was the same for him. Everyone tested it when they were growing up: seeing how far they could pull apart, coming back with intense relief.”

“Some were trying to speak, and they clustered around her feet and even tried to pluck at her leggings, though the taboo held them back. She could tell why, poor things; they missed the heavy solid warmth of their humans’ bodies; just as Pantalaimon would have done, they longed to press themselves against a heartbeat.”

“We are all subject to the fates. But we must all act as if we are not,” said the witch, “or die of despair.”

“Behind them lay pain and death and fear; ahead of them lay doubt, and danger, and fathomless mysteries. But they weren’t alone. So Lyra and her dæmon turned away from the world they were born in, and looked toward the sun, and walked into the sky.“
