this is such a stunning and a powerful story, made with so much care and thought, i find myself thinking about it still now!!
with an immaculate art style, colour palette, and story telling skill; i loved just about everything in this book!!
it cherishes the existence of stories, the ways stories connect people, that it helps us give words to our feelings;
i strongly recommend this!!

This book is amazing. The art is beautiful, the writing is wonderful, and has a nostalgic feel to it. It made me cry, it's got so much heart. I'm going to edit and update this after I let it sink in some more since I just finished it, but definitely a recommendation from me!!
Very mild spoilers for the ending (if you need it!)
It ends happily between the mom and the main character,  Tíên. Just in case you were wondering!

This graphic novel was a beautiful exploration of one family's interactions told through both their lives and fairytales that parallel their experiences. It talks about sexuality, immigration, loss, love, and the intersection of different identities that can occur within one family and within one person. The Magic Fish is hopeful, sorrowful, and emotional as it dances and weaves its way to its ultimate conclusion.

HOLY. SHIT. Why did I wait so long to read this? I am all up in my feelings after finishing this one. How is this a debut? How were there so many storylines and yet they were so perfectly intertwined?
