I loved this book. Gay is a phenomenal writer. Some of the material was hard to read, especially if you’ve suffered trauma in the past. It really hit home for me and left a deep impression, and it deals really well with trauma and the competitions of life and how we respond to said trauma and why we act the way we do.

This was my first experience with Roxane Gay’s writing, and it made it very clear she is a master author. Her writing was beautiful, emotional, and brutally honest. The stories in this collection were clever and raw and thought provoking. Some of my favorites included The “Sacrifice of Darkness”, which was like reading a fairytale; “Open Marriage”, which had my favorite main character/narrator; “How”, which had a unique organization and compelling characters; “North Country”, which made me tear up; and “Difficult Women”, which was just spectacularly well written in a clever style. So technically speaking this was a very well written collection of short stories, but it was ultimately a bit dark for my taste. While I enjoyed many of the stories, I also found many to be too dark and depressing for my liking. While many were well rounded, others felt underdeveloped and just confusing. I also found the themes a bit repetitive after the first half of the stories. But overall this collection was well done and impactful.

Loved these stories

This was my first time reading Roxane Gay and it won't be my last. Loved these stories and wished many were longer.

This is the saddest shit I’ve ever read.

I loved most of these stories as much as I was unsettled by them. Brilliant writing and storytelling.

This book absolutely killed me! The writing is so captivating - it made me hurt from the injustice of the world. This book is beautiful, heartbreaking and addictive. People were yelling at me to get my attention but I was lost in its pages. The stories told in Difficult Women will stay with me for a long time. Thank the lord for Roxane Gay.

There is no doubt that Roxane Gay is an excellent writer. However, these stories were so negative and hopeless, I had difficulty finishing the book. In spite of that, I may read some of her other work because she writes so well.
