What I liked:
- very interesting premise. I love the atmospheric setting and the languages
-engaging narrator
- her relationship with the girl
- the side characters all felt like complex people
-it was tense and I couldn’t put it down
-a few scenes toward the end are so eery and vivid. Really well done
- the scenes with the brother keep me reading.
- the Inuit culture and atmosphere are just great to read about

What I didn’t like:
-the ending twist is fairly predictable and the final scene is too crazy and violent. Maybe it will work well in a movie, though or is typical in this genre
-I thought everyone was actually too hard on Wyatt throughout the book. Obviously my opinion changed, but it annoyed me while reading. He didn’t read as deserving their behavior
-the child abuse was hard to take.
- the epilogue is implausible as well. It was fine and I’m glad to know what eventually happened but it really requires extension of disbelief
- the mental health part is a bit odd. As someone who has mental health issues, I don’t like the implications that she can overcome them if she just tries hard enough. That’s not always true since your brain has a disorder. I did appreciate that mental health was depicted at all, however

I have mixed feelings. I really enjoyed the ride but when I stepped back from this book the picky part of my brain got annoyed with some flaws

Very descriptive, but I never quite knew where the story was going to go.  The ending was sweet, but left loose ends.

I don’t know if I’d say I liked this, but I was interested enough that I kept reading. The anxiety experienced by the main character is gone into in detail, which is likely to be triggering to some people. It was for me and so were some parts of the ending, which is probably why I really can’t say I liked the book. Probably I should just stop picking up thrillers. If this just hasn’t been a thriller but the rest of the plot had been the same without all of the intrigue and possibilities of foul play I probably would have enjoyed it more, because the stuff about the girl and the linguistics and all of that kept me wanting to finish it while everything that made it a thriller and not just a fun sci fi adventure ultimately made me uncomfortable.

This isn't the type of book I normally read and I loved it. This is also the first time I annotated an ARC copy of a book. I liked all the characters to a point and what they brought to the story. I loved that this book a me guessing from the start. There some I trusted right away any others I knew I shouldn't trust. It was a good pace of reading and it was very easy to read, even with all the science talk. I will be reading more from Erica Ferencik ever soon.
