Sadly, the only thing I was able to appreciate in what seemed to be a standalone graphic novel is the graphical part. Well drawn, nicely done. However, I cannot understand a thing of what happens there. I don't think it would've made any difference if I had more context, because the storytelling is so fuzzy - I found myself unable to follow any idea that the book wants to present. It's not the lack of context that makes the story unreadable, but the story itself doesn't make much sense.

Kill! Death! Skinny girls doing swords stuff!!! Japan! I don't know.

I made the mistake of buying this under the vague impression that it was a standalone graphic novel and, even if it might tie in to others, it can be read on its own. I mean, it didn't have any number on the volume, or anything to suggest otherwise.

Oh, well. I had no clue what the hell was going on - and the prose style was pretty bad. If these characters were to speak plainly about themselves and what they're doing, I feel they'd say something like:

"Behold! I am Shi! I will tell you my family's history while using gratuitous Japanese! I will hint at things which you won't get! I am in a forest and I hunt deer, but you must take into account the fact that there's also a kabuki play being performed, and it's about hunting the Ainu people - or something of the sort."

"We are Japanese secondary characters and we, too, use gratuitous Japanese! That doesn't mean we actually know Japanese, because we say things like "harikari" instead of "harakiri"!"

And then there are some fights. Some people win. Some die. I remain confused.
