This was so interesting. I’ve heard speculation about James and his favourites but there is so much evidence. It’s like so obvious.
Also I really enjoyed this because I’ve studied the Tudors and my dissertation was in James coming to power. But I’ve never really seen it from the Scottish side so this was great because the early part/half of the book is all Scotland and what was going on there.

Excellent narration (I love Scottish accents), well-written, and probably very interesting to people with a greater interest in this historic era than me, who was mainly in it for the queer history drama. I was fed... but I did zone out too often to give it a higher rating. But I do not think this is the book's fault! Informative and sensitive.

This is the second book that I read about King James the first of England. We follow James's rather violent and unstable upbringing. He seemed to be surrounded by upheaval and severity from his parents to his caregivers and mentors. We see the many loves that came into his life. James Stuart had a unique life where he lived this bisexual existence in secret but with much force and gusto. He was not deterred from his desires by religion or political sabotage. There is something noble and heroic about this kind of pride. Although he enjoyed his loves, I think he was also used many times by these so called loves. I liked all the intrigue as well. It really shaped his leadership. I would say this is utterly fascinating and enthralling. I have one last book about King James that I will buy to read maybe next year. He was an early gay forefather in many ways. I give this one a 4.5/5.

An excellent introductory book into the world of King James VI, a much caricatured monarch, but as this book proves the real history is much more interesting.
