I thought this was going to be a layered mystery, perhaps about a family or house's past or a series of women who had been framed. Alas, no. The murder mystery was interesting but everything around it was of little to no interest to me. I didn't care about the missing painting or the search for a past family member and those took up so much time. There were also so many characters and the reveal took ages to explain because it was way too involved. I was hoping and expecting so much more here.

The mix of plots got a bit muddled, and the ending leaves everything WAY open for a sequel. It turns out that MacAdams maybe has better instincts than his self loathing allows him to realized? Jo also seems to be getting a better grip on what her autism means for how she actually wants to live her life herself.

The family history and archive stuff was fun, really liked secondary characters like Tula and Ben. Formulaic, yes, but a mostly fun read, especially in how it calls back to classic mysteries and murder shows alike. Would probably read follow-up installment when/if that appears.

My low rating has more to do with the genre than anything else. I think I’m giving up on mysteries that follow the standard formula. Just not my thing. Credit to the author, though, as I did finish the book and thought it became much more enjoyable toward the end.

The Framed Women of Ardemore House is a fabulously enticing and mysterious book. The English countryside setting, neurodivergent FMC and murder mystery worthy of a Sherlock tale make this book a fun and twisty read. The characters are so entertaining, the twists are shocking and the ending is completely unexpected. I want to read more about Jo and see what adventures she finds herself in next.
