I have trouble believing this is a debut novel. Expertly written, with a deeply rich and compelling world and characters that not only feel alive, but are so fun to follow. I was a little concerned at first about the three perspectives getting confusing, but they were balanced really well with each providing a different perspective on the same events. Following the political games of all three characters was also compelling, as each felt smart and solid in their reasoning. The 600+ pages flew by.

What a great read! I recently dived into the world of Brandon Sanderson and following some advice I found online, I started the adventure with Mistborn trilogy, then read Elantris.
I can definitely see the difference in writing - some parts seemed somewhat rushed, but the characters were great, so was the world building and the magic system.
I know there's supposed to be a sequel written at some point (or was this idea dropped?), and it would be nice to return to Arelon, but Elantris is a full standalone novel and if there's no continuation published, it's still perfect in its simplicity.
A great debut of one of the best - or one of the most popular at the very least - fantasy authors. It's great to see how Sanderson's craftsmanship had developed over the short period of time since Elantris - it is too often we see a splendid debut only for the author to never repeat the success. I cannot wait to read my way through the rest of Cosmere!

I loved this book. It's pacing is fantastic especially considering how slow sandersons books can be. I loved the story and character development. I think the magic system was a explained in a bit of a rushed way and I wish we'd got more depth there, but noting it's a standalone I understand why it was done this way. The last 150 pages were so tense and insane

for how much negative I hear about this book, I actually really enjoyed it. I was surprised at every turn and genuinely liked Raoden and Sarene. My one comment isn’t I wasn’t emotionally invested enough in the characters to be sad when certain things happened. Final comment, who tf is Hoid and why have I now seen him twice???? 3.75/5
