Ruining Her

In all honesty, I never expected Josh to get his own book after being introduced to him in Entwined with Him. Don’t get me wrong, he had me very curious about him and how his mind works. I didn’t realize how deep things really were for him!

Josh is the ultimate anti-hero. Intense, passionate, a bit unhinged but oh so hot! He’s always been different and has never shied away from that fact. He lives a solitary life for the most part because there is no point in having others around him when he doesn’t “feel”. Until he met Ella and she became his new sister, did he think he could have warmth towards another person.

But there was someone once. A woman who broke through that barrier, no matter what it was that was holding him back. No matter how hard he truly pushed. Then she disappeared, and he feels like it was the best thing she could do.

Then she shows back up, a mess, tired and beaten down.

Emily has only truly, deeply loved one person. Josh was it for her from the get-go. She saw through the hardness, the intensity, and the anger. She saw who he was in the depth of his heart. She was the goodness of the world, the light. When he pushes her away, she goes.
She moves on with her life, but at what cost? In the end, every bit of light in her is threatened to be snuffed out by the man who is supposed to love her. She fights back and fights hard.

She makes her way back to Josh, and what happens next is unexpected and challenging. Their passion and love for each other are off the charts. But there’s something lurking in the shadows, and secrets will continue to fall. The biggest one of all.

I absolutely loved their journey so far. I can’t wait to see how things play out in the next one!

The book is a good read, and Kylie Kent did an excellent job of giving trigger warnings so I didn't go into reading it completely unaware. The story was easy to follow, and the characters were great. Josh came across—at first—as the bad guy, but it's shown he wasn't the monster. While it isn't quite my cup of tea, I would recommend this book.

Ruining Her is the first book in the McKinley Ranch Duet by Kylie Kent. It is the story of Josh (a minor character in Entwined With Him - the last book of The Merge series), a loner with a penchant for danger, and Emily, his weakness, the love of his life who he pushed away years ago… They are thrust back into each other’s lives, through actions, consequences, or fate, it was bound to happen - is this just a recipe for disaster? Or will they be able save each other?

This is my absolute favourite of the author’s books so far - I say that every time but that, to me, means that Kylie has something special. She has such a talent for telling a story, weaving in so much detail, painting a picture, while still allowing the reader’s own imagination to flourish, adding colour to the lines drawn by her.

The author’s writing style is very easy to read, while still being gripping enough to hold attention. The story switches between between the POV of Josh and Emily, which is a style I love; being able to see into the souls of them, often being privy to things kept secret from other characters.

The story flows extremely well, is packed full of Kylie’s signature romance, steam, and angst. I whole heartedly recommend this book.
