I understand why this book is a favorite horror read for some and why it became so popular. I think if I had read this earlier in more horror journey, I would have liked it more. Parts of it were shocking, but it felt so rushed in many ways that it took away from the impact. I think Eric La Rocca does a very good job at ideation, it’s just sometimes the execution lacks a certain finesse. It felt like a really good short story written by a classmate in Creative Writing. I would want to see more development with the characters and I think that would make the punch that much more powerful. I didn’t dislike it however, and in fact the premise of all three short stories were interesting.

Woweeeewow. For starters, this was the WEIRDEST book I've ever read. This collection not only has his famous (and out of print) Things Have Gotten Worse..., but there are also two other short stories. One about a grieving mother and the other is about a REAL odd neighbor. The first story stuck with me...maybe not in the best way, but after finishing it 2 days ago, I'm still thinking about it. That says something, right? The second sort of broke my heart, but I LOVED it. The third was my least favorite but still not bad.

Overall, I think I have to give it a 4 star...Maybe even a 5 bc I've given some 5 stars to books I can't remember anything about. I PROMISE I won't forget this one... ever.

Even though the stories he writes are full of suspense and thrill, I can’t help but find comfort amongst the horror. There’s something so scary about certain aspects about our mundane life; either faith or religion or love - there’s always something to learn from our demons and fears.

I was literally on hold for this e-book for TEN MONTHS and for what.

Anyway, I originally marked a different version of this book as “currently reading” without realizing that was just one novella and I read a collection of three. I guess that doesn’t really matter but *ugh* I only wanted to read this book because the other cover is so great. Whateverrrr. And also the other Goodreads listing has a much lower rating than this one so of course I was interested!!

I don’t usually, if ever, read horror, but it was time to challenge myself. All three novellas (especially the first one) were gross, creepy, and memorable. I liked the first one the best and the last one the least. But all were still good! Sure, they left a lot of questions and I did think the author could have done more with them, but the fact that I could not put this book down was enough from me.

I do wish instead of three novellas, that this was just the first story, but the length of the whole collection. It was most compelling, but also could have had so much more added to it. Still loved it though, even if I wanted to vomit.
