DNF because of mother’s illness, which is a TW for me.

I really wanted to like this book, but I think I came in with the wrong expectations. I really wanted a sorta coming of age story about a Haitian FMC and her struggles living in a Haitian household, culture references, the inner conflict of being both Haitian and American, food references, etc. Stuff like that. I went into this book blind which might have been on me because I had no idea what this was about before reading it. I honestly wanted to dnf this at page 30 because nothing in this was interesting me. I had been reading this on and off for a few days at this point. I wanted to give it till page 100 to see if I still wanted to dnf but obviously I couldn't even make it to that. I've read some reviews and there is praise for this book, but there is a lot of criticism and I honestly don't want to waste my time on a book I'm not enjoying.

I think I'm not gelling with the format the story is being told in. I'm just not intrigued by where this story is going.

Ok so I was low-key getting scared that I had “outgrown YA” until this book. A lot of the YA books Ive read recently I havent loved, even if Ive been able to recognize them as good and important books, like American Street by Ibi Zoboi. But this one hit a sweet spot. I sailed right through it and loved every second of it. It’s got a mixed, multi-media format with some parts in the form of emails, news articles, notes, letters, and text messages but it does it very seamlessly and not in a tacky way. I loved Alaine’s wit and this book gave me a beautiful look into Haitian culture. Will definitely be picking up the other book by this Sister-Duo at some point. Alaine’s internal voice is so strong and her personality so well defined throughout this book while still allowing room for growth. I am very grateful to have gotten the chance to be the audience to her mind. Happy Hatian Heritage Month!
