Ahh, T Kingfisher, inspiring me to read out of my comfort zone and into the world of classic haunted houses, creeping dread, and

zombifying fungi

This *just* passes my personal Doctor Who/Star Trek measuring stick of tolerable horror (i.e., I can tolerate science fantasy stories that are as unsettling as the scariest episodes of those shows as long as they're also creative, interesting, thoughtful, contain endearing characters, etc.).

Solid horror, very creepy, super cool universe--love how the main character's culture has a distinctly gendered soldier class that many readers would classify as non-binary. Also one of the only books I've read with a character with tinnitus, whose disability was well integrated in the story.

Kingfisher sparks the Gothic genre anew here. It glows like an algae on the page, illuminating the imagination with spindly webs. I devoured this book, and my only criticism is that there isn’t more. Easton in this novella is a fully fleshed out character, and the edit to make kan (a soldier pronoun) Gender Queer. It was a wonderful surprise and brilliantly executed.
