Picked this up for a book club. It was fine, but I just wasn't that into the particular masculinity of it, so decided not to finish. Shrug.

My first Elmore Leonard. Perhaps I didn’t pick a good one to start with but I was really underwhelmed. Was kind of left questioning what the whole point of the book was by the end. Based on the movie adaptations of his books, I expected hijinx to ensue after getting past what the dusk jacket described in terms of plot. Sadly, there were basically no hijinx to be found in this one.
It seems to me that Elmore Leonard was writing purely for fun or was in need of cash when he wrote Bandits. The dialogue is his strong point, as usual. Setting the context to examine recent Nicaraguan history surprised me. Plotwise, stuff keeps happening until it wraps up, and some of the hijinks are more interesting than others.
I always enjoy Elmore Leonard particularly the conversations between his main characters. Dialogue crackles along and is often so witty and slick that you can almost picture yourself there.
Leonard's plot lines are usually well constructed and convincing. Not so here - an elastic band stretched to it's credibility limits applies.
A Guatemalan general and erstwhile sophisticated thug pursuing and enamoured of a beautiful peasant girl escaping from a leper hospital. where all his troops massacre the inmates with machetes. Throw in a very attractive lapsed nun, let them all end up in New Orleans pursuing a huge amount of donated money and you see what I mean.
The writing is still amazing as always!!
