There are two things I have loved since I was little - werewolves and Stephen King. I first found out about Cycle of the Werewolf when I was thirteen, standing in the library's horror section and scanning King's extensive bibliography in the back pages of Salem's Lot. The combination of my two horror obsessions? I was immediately desperate to find a copy. Though I searched for years in libraries and bookstores, I never found one.

Remembering this old desire, I ordered Cycle earlier this year. It did not meet ten years of hype. It's a very classic take on the werewolf tale, told in a very typical Kingsian way. There's a nostalgic, American small town, an intrepid child protagonist, and a religious hypocrite who serves as the story's villain. It is by the numbers and no thrills. The calendar motif is slightly repetitive. Every month, a small-town caricature is created, and almost immediately killed. Whilst there are flashes of brilliance - especially the famous "something inhuman has come to Tarker's Mill" passage - most of the prose is flat and uninspiring. Constantly, the wheel chair bound hero is described as having "useless stick legs". There's gotta be a better way to say that.

It's neither my favourite nor my least favourite of King's works. Expect something typical and fun, and you won't be disappointed.

Perfect King short story
Outstanding artwork
Silver Bullet movie needs to get remade

I was going thru some boxes and found a second copy of this book so I decided to read it again. It still holds up and Berni Wrightson’s artwork is just as impressive as ever.
