I love Aldridge's use of atmosphere in "Deephaven" to create a little mystery and magic. It was perfectly creepy and charming, and I especially enjoyed how for all the angst and terror in the plot, the queer elements were quiet and angst-free: not a horror story about queerness, but a horror story with queerness in it.

I am not the target audience, but a good book for 8 year olds makes you feel like you've become one again. Elementary school me would have loved it, and the art is perfect.

For a book distinctly out of my comfort zone, I appreciated the narrative Aldridge put together. Aldridge created one of the best Gothic atmospheres I have ever read. I also appreciated all the nuances that Aldridge gave to Nev. Unfortunately, the overall mystery and horrific/fantastical elements felt shallow and fell short of making sense. Ultimately, I do not think that this is a bad book. In fact, I think it's fairly well-written. it's just not the genre for me.
