I'm not quite sure why I'm punishing myself by rereading the Xanth books. I remember that I liked them the first time I read them, eons ago, when I was young and foolish. Now my tastes have changed and I realize that each and every one of them is basically the same book. A party of adventurers sets out to save the magical land of Xanth from certain doom, many puns and much sexual innuendo later, they succeed and live happily ever after. This is number four in the series, and I think I'm cured of my desire to relive my youth at least through bad fantasy literature.

The objectification of Irene by every male character and the number of times looking up her skirt was discussed was just horrible. She's 15.

This book was slow up until the end. It was a book that was about the journey not the outcome. But I wanted to enjoy the journey a little more then I did. All in all the book was ok but not great.

I really enjoyed this installment in the series. We are always meeting new characters and seeing old ones grow. I really enjoyed Dor and Irene’s budding relationship through out the book. It’s very obvious they’re meant to be together in the end due to their place in the kingdom but it’s nice to see them fall together at the same time outside of just future duties.

Another great one in the Xanth series. I particularly enjoyed the imagery in this one, though it is textbook Anthony/Xanth. Dor serves as the interim King of Xanth and goes on a dangerous journey that tests his ability to be King. We are introduced to Arnolde, the magician centaur who becomes exiled from his land when the other centaurs learn of his magic.

Overall, a fun read in this series!
