Naomi and Luca have written to each other since fifth grade. Their pen pal letters were filled with insults and sarcastic sparring. Strangely this turned into some sort of friendship until it dried up. Two years after the last letter Naomi suddenly gets "Hate Mail" at her desk. With no return address to write to, she is determined to find out more about where Luca vanished to by visiting his former addresses. At the same time her handsome upstairs neighbour asks her out to a date.

I really liked the premise. I loved the letters the two sent to each other, yes even knowing they were coming from fifth graders. They both knew it was all fun and games. The plot was predictable, but in a way every romance novel plot is. I liked the banter, as well as the inner conflict Naomi had, she was going out with Jake, while still looking to reconnect with Luca. What I didn't like was that Jake wilfully withheld information.

This read came highly recommended to me. I loved the character banter within the letters and how the letters developed the characters. Although bigger picture…….. this is so predictable and concerning. As soon as other characters said to Naomi how bad she is with names and THE name incident I knew who Jake actually was. Within the story it’s cute how they each like the chase to find each other but in real life it’s soooooooooo creepy and concerning the lengths they’re willing to go to stalk each other. I also really don’t understand how she ended up in Miami and how he just HAPPENED to also move into the same building as her. My rating did come down to a 3 because even though I enjoyed the characters and their relationships, I just can’t get over how creepy and icky the stalker thing is.

While the concept here is cute, and also very similar to you’ve got mail, I cannot handle miscommunication tropes and this is THE DUMBEST miscommunication trope I’ve ever read.

Plus, when the miscommunication is resolved, there’s still 15% of the book left where the characters are purposefully being mean to each other and not trying to be together at all. That was stupid and confusing to me.

Cute and easy read

What I liked about this was the twist on epistolary romance: hate letters instead of love, or just regular correspondence.

But my god, was the FMC stupid. She was so dumb I wasn't sure I could finish the book. But it had just enough intrigue to keep me going. I really wanted to like this, but she was a major barrier. I kept thinking, how old is this idiot? She's old enough to have a career and buy a house but gives off the worrrrrst new adult vibes.

I also think maybe the plot or arc or whatever was too simple to carry the length of this book. Various times I looked down at the percentage and was like, REALLY? THIS MUCH LEFT? HOW???!!!

Ooooooofffffffffffffff
