This one was rough.

Non spoilers review:
I probably should have DNF’d when I started suspecting the “plot twist” about 15-20% of the way through. I kept hoping I was either wrong or the author would figure out how to make something super icky and gross less icky and gross. TL;DR this book is marketed as a rom com but has dub-con and no real resolution to the central conflict. Both characters make some very shady and screwed up decisions and it’s written off as “we’re both just soooo into each other.”

This book is talked about like the next best thing for people who enjoyed The Hating Game. The problem with that is the central premise of that book is around co-workers who “hate” each other but have simmering sexual tension while this book is literal children writing horrible things back and forth to each other and somehow becoming obsessed with each other? If a child in my life showed me a letter even close to any number of letters from this book, I would flip out.

If you can get past dubious consent situations and mediocre chemistry, you might enjoy this, but if you can’t, maybe save yourself some time?

SPOILERY REVIEW!!!!

I don’t dnf books normally. But when I was pretty sure he was going to sleep with her without her knowing who he was, I should have set the book down and walked away. It wasn’t cute, it wasn’t funny. It was gross. She consented to having sex with the cute guy from upstairs, not the asshole she’s been writing for most of her life. It actually felt like a psychological thriller and I hated every second of it. The book didn’t even really try to resolve it. She was pissed off for a chapter or two and then suddenly wasn’t.
