3.5, because too brutally honest for me.

A well-written story that felt incredibly evocative of the lives of millennial women. Tori feels real, flawed and her struggles and dilemmas felt very true to life. Be aware that the book features an emotionally abusive relationship and struggles with alcohol, food and body image

Who the f*** is Tori Bailey?! There is no doubt that she is winning the game of life. A best selling author, she has inspired millions of women to live their best life, all while living in the perfect relationship. Only it’s not. Her long-term boyfriend won’t even talk about marriage, let alone kids. And when her best friend falls in love and becomes pregnant, she starts to realise how bad things really are. It’s time for Tori to practice what she preached. But is she brave enough to do it?

An honest and real book that I absolutely loved. There are so many romance books out there that just talk about finding the perfect guy and falling in love with them. But what happens after?! What happens when you get stuck in a shitty relationship going nowhere?! This book explores all those challenges - the challenges of not wanting to leave, of working out what you want from life and from yourself. It’s raw and honest and I think perfect for the modern woman. So well written - it makes you laugh and cry in all the best ways. Part of me hopes there’s a sequel so we can find out what happens next to Tori Bailey.

For me it’s very hard to rate this book. I still don’t know if I liked it or not. 😂
There were so many sentences and scenes and thoughts were I thought “OMG YES!!! excactly!!!”.
I loved that it showed that what you see on the outside is not always what’s happening behind closed doors. That the perfect insta feed and appearance doesn’t mean that there isn’t shit going on behind the scenes.
I loved, that it showed, that what makes YOU happy doesn’t have to be what society wants for you and expects from you.

But there were also so many scenes where I would have wished for the author to show, that what’s going on right now is absolutely NOT okay. If it was bad behaviour from Tori or things that happened to Tori. It made me feel super uncomfortable.
Don’t get me wrong, I loved that the book was super real and there were realistic thoughts. But some things were also super cliché and sometimes a bit over the top.

Also our protagonist felt the same in the beginning and the end of the book.
The sole plot was showing a really toxic and abusive, horrible relationship.
But there simply wasn’t any character development. The ending was so rushed, that there was just no time left to see Tori changing for the better. Sometimes she was even super unsympathetic(and maybe this was intentional). To relativise her own miserable feelings she had really awful thoughts about other people.

All in all I don’t think this book is for everyone. I don’t know what it is with me, loving authors YA books and disliking their Adult ones. 😂🙈

Conceited and insecure main character, but actually kind of relatable. Weird toxic relationship with SO and dramatic ending. Enjoyable tbh. 6/10

Can Holly write a bad book? No

I thought this would be a 4/4.5 at first, when I thought Tori was a refreshingly honest character and I liked the style. But she soon became grating and annoyingly judgemental and DEAR GOD HOW MYCH FUCKING FATPHOBIA. It was constant, cloying fat-shaming, as well as constantly describing her pregnant best friend as fat - no, she's pregnant. And I found it didn't go where I needed it to go as soon as it did. 350 pages of depression and annoyance, and 10 of slight redemption.
