One of the most heart-pounding and adrenaline induced book comas I’ve ever had!! I was fully taken under (pun intended) by this modern day survival story. The times of the day when I wasn’t reading it, I was thinking about it. And the times I was reading it, I was thinking OH MY GOD HOW IS THIS GONNA END?!! HOW DO THEY SURVIVE A PLANE CRASH, AND THEN A PLANE SINKING??!!

I’d been wanting to read this for a long time now, but waited until after I’d taken several flights and had no more in the near future because, well, duh. This book is like your worst fears come to life, and the way Newman wrote it, it’s so scarily accurate. Not to mention, one of the main characters in this nightmare situation was named Shannon, so that only furthered how immersive the novel was to begin with.

Alas, it was an incredible book. You’ll want to read it all in sitting, if possible. I’ve always found the stories behind disaster scenarios fascinating and this one was well-researched and supported to really make you understand what it would be like in real life.

This book was just wow. I’m blown away by the storyline and the characters bc they were written so well, it genuinely immerses you into the book to the point where you are just as anxious as the characters about what the next move of survival will be.

I saw this on the thriller side of bookstagram and everyone giving it good ratings so intrigue caught the best of me. Plus, the premise was different from anything else I've read. I was curious how this author was going to make a thriller out of a plane crash. From my knowledge, I think the author was a former flight attendant and this is her second book. Now, I didn't hate this book at all, but I don't think the story was compelling enough to be classified as a thriller. I've seen other people complain about the overwhelming amount of flat characters in this book which is fair, but my biggest grievance about the book was the overwhelming amount of technical jargon within it. When those parts came up (and there are a lot of them; 70% of the book is plane jargon) I was completely and utterly lost. It's obvious the author knows what's she talking about which is great for her, but not for her audience who probably aren't well-versed in airplane terminology.

Even when they were describing the position of the plane when it was underwater I was still a little confused (still don't know the mechanics of the rescue mission). I heard this was going to be turned into a movie and I'm not surprised in the slightest. This book felt like it was written in hopes of being a movie rather than an actual book. Honestly, I wanted to dnf this book in the beginning and I would've rated it lower, but it did have one redeeming quality: it made me cry like a newborn baby. I balled my eyes out so many times during this book like it's not even funny. Like my anxiety was UP once the story got going.

I don't know if this is bad of me to say, but I think the story would've been more impactful if the mother had in fact died.

Highly recommend this book to people who love a book that keeps them at the edge of your seat. I felt like I was there, with all the characters. Hoping for a miracle. It was definitely intense but I thoroughly enjoyed reading it.

Would I read it again, I don’t know. That’s why I scored it a 4/5. The multiple POV’s didn’t help as it took me a few chapter to get into the grove of it but I am so glad I read it.

Warning: there are several f words but they were not overtly done.

SYNOPSIS:

Shortly after takeoff, Flight 1421 crashes into the Pacific Ocean. In the process of evacuating, 12 passengers end up remaining onboard the plane, which proceeds to sink 200 feet underwater. They try to remain alive, while a rescue team tries to save them.

MY THOUGHTS

Usually, books are so much better than movies, but this is one that I think would be a better cinematic experience.
This is completely plot-driven with no real character development. The characters are all very flat & one-dimensional. I wasn’t into the writing style either.
I do think the author did a lot of research, and I have read she is a former flight attendant as well. Kudos to her. But, I personally felt like the book was way too technical, and the technical plane descriptions didn’t serve a lot of purpose.
Despite using fancy aviation lingo, the book is really hard to visualize. It felt like I was reading a manual in some parts.
The premise is an interesting one, but the execution is lacking for me.
The book is soooo predictable, and it is completely unbelievable.

TL;DR: ⭐️⭐️⭐️mehhh. in the minority here, but this didn’t live up to the hype. plot-driven, predictable, no character development, & extremely far-fetched.
