Holy mackerel, Mo Hayder is right up there with Dennis Lehane. Compulsively readable, hard to take in some spots, with inspiring prose. Can't wait for the next one!

I liked the writing, but male murder mystery writers, in my limited experience, seem to focus on sexuality of the criminal and the investigator quite a bit. This criminal was so weird and we knew who he was by design halfway through, so I felt no real desire to recheck it out from the library when it expired. I didn't finish, but don't feel I missed anything.

Fairly generic crime thriller, not one of Hayder's best, but not the worst either.

YUCK. Not worth finishing, but I did it. I listened to this on audiobook and despite the narrator's valiant work, I can't believe I got through it to the end. Too many revolting serial killer scenes - not my thing. For me it was barely worth the tickmark on my Reading Challenge list (and by mid-book when shit got really gross, that was my only motivation, otherwise this would have been DNF). Even the good-guy characters weren't interesting.

Over the top violence against women is not my preferred form of entertainment. If I'm going to read a thriller or suspense novel, I prefer psychological drama rather than gratuitous gore. The ending almost pushed me over the edge. But I like the way Mo Hayder writes and I'm interested in enough in the Detective to continue reading in the series. But if there are more prostitutes or necrophilia, I'm out.
