I adore the Beartown series.

This story captures so beautifully what it means to be human and all that we're capable of... the best, the worst, and everything in between. It is emotional and captivating, at times heartbreaking, funny, tense and hopeful.

Backman's characters are wonderfully complex, imperfect like the rest of us, and utterly lovable (or at least most of them...).

The writing style is simple, succinct and fairly blunt, and there's a lot of foreshadowing.

I was hooked immediately and will definitely be rereading this in the years to come.

Almost DNF’d this book because the start was very very slow, even for someone who loves hockey. But I am SOOOO glad I didn’t. Wow, Backman has a way of touching on very deep issues. I will say be warned that if you have any history of SA and don’t feel completely “healed” from it, approach with caution. It gets pretty heavy into topics of victim blaming and even as someone who has never experienced it, I had to put it down a few times because it made me so upset. Unfortunately, it reflects reality. Overall, really enjoyed the book and makes a great commentary on community, power, and moral failures.

It's been 3.5 years since I first read this book. I was a bit scared rereading this; scared it would not hold up to how utterly magical it felt to read this for the first time. But the truth is that it was even better than I remembered. The writing is sublime; the characters are complex; the story is so well-interwoven. I've never read anything like this book and I will sing its praises until everyone around me has read this.
