This book is either terrible or poor genius, or possibly both.

What an incredible read! This is a collection of short stories but it's also more than that. The same building looms in the background of almost all of the stories but it's not the only thing that keeps popping up in multiple stories. One stories side characters come back as protagonists in others and vice versa. Other things keep coming back too. While you could read the stories on their own and feel completely happy, it gave me huge joy to see all the little things that build bridges from one story to another.

Darkly hilarious is in many ways a great description of the book. I could also call it joyful, sad, absurd, morbid, touching, slightly scary and heart warming. I loved going from one story to another, never quite knowing whose perspective or what kind of mood it would be. Some stories were told in first person, others in third. And yet it all was also very cohesive.

I wish I could have stayed with the residents of 1933 Ivansk Street for a longer. And I hope Maria Reva will write more books I get to read.

This was a solid 3.5 stars for me. I thought the stories were generally written well, but I much preferred the first half to the second. They got a little weird for me and I didn't love any of Zaya's story. Still a good read, but not a favorite. I'm picky with short stories, and the inclusion of a few things I didn't love dropped the rating down a half star for me.
