I find Artemis to be an extremely interesting character and I wish she found someone who was less of a dick than Maximus. But c'est la vie.
He is too intense of a person after reading the previous two books with Winter and Godric as heartwarming heroes. I like the set up for Artemis' brother Apollo's story.

2.75*
I’ve been binging this series, and was really looking forward to this pairing,as it has many of the tropes I most love, such as a wallflower heroine, an asshat hero who will inevitably be brought low by love. But…
A) he wasn’t. There is no, I repeat *no* groveling about the fact that he continued to be awful (and *mean*) until almost the end of the book. And even then, he’s not seeking her out, it’s due to some Ghost business.
Which brings me to
B) compared to the other books this one was SO BORING. At least the first part, and then it was SO CONTRIVED. He’s definitely the worst ghost of the three. And this was a pretty silly Ghost storyline.
C) I was also made super uncomfortable by his sexual hyper-aggressiveness at the beginning of his pursuit of her, and the power imbalance never completely evened out
I really liked Artemis, I think, though the more I enumerate Maximus’ faults, the more I judge her for pitting up with him.

I am finally finished with the series (up to this point). Honestly, that was my biggest thought when I finished, rather than thinking about the book.
I can't think of anything wrong with the book, except maybe that the threat of Old Switch should have been a lot greater. There was no urgency in the conflict, it's possible that it could've been set up earlier on in a prior novel since the series is about connection and continuity. I never felt that anyone was in real danger from Old Switch. Although the who-is-it was decent, I didn't really care who it was because I never felt that there was danger from Old Switch.
I expected more out of Artemis given her introduction in the prior novels, and in her name.
I have to admit I'm not interested in Apollo's story at all-the next scheduled novel.

After losing both her parents and her twin brother who’s locked in a mental institution after being accused of murdering three of his friends, Artemis is forced into taking a position as her cousin’s companion, and while treated well, she’s still little more than her cousin Penelope’s servant. Her entire focus is on finding a way to save her brother. Everyone else has written him off as a lost cause, a madman who should be forgotten, but he’s the only person Artemis thinks about and she’ll do whatever she can to help him because she knows he’s sane and didn’t kill those men. When she finds out that the Duke of Wakefield is really the Ghost of St. Giles, she goes to him with an ultimatum that he helps her brother or she’ll out him as the Ghost.
Maximus has spent his entire adult life trying to avenge his parent’s murders. He was with them as a young boy in St. Giles when they were killed and that night changed his life completely. His mother’s emerald necklace was stolen the night she was killed and Maximus has been tracking the various emerald pieces for years after the killer pawned them off. When another masked man makes his return to St. Giles, Maximus believes he’s found the man he’s been searching for all these years and that this person might be closer to him than he realizes.
I really enjoyed both Maximus and Artemis’s stories, especially Artemis. She’s a strong heroine, fierce and she’s very much her own person. But there’s something a little vulnerable about her, in private moments when she longs for a different life, one that would include a husband and kids, I just wanted this heroine to find happiness and a life that’s more than just being someone else’s companion. There is really nothing about Artemis that I didn’t like. She’s not a ‘boo-hoo, poor me’ kind of woman. She accepts the life she’s been forced into, she tries her hardest to help her brother and when the chance arises for her to experience passion with Maximus, she takes the risk and goes to his room. By doing so, she knows she’s probably going to lose her position with Penelope since she has her sights set on marrying the Duke, but Artemis wants this stolen moment for herself. Her interactions with all the characters were engaging but I especially loved her relationship with Phoebe, Maximus’s sister who’s losing her eyesight. I just loved Artemis, if you couldn’t already tell!
Maximus and the guilt and anger that’s been driving him as the Ghost of St. Giles for years tugged at my heart. He feels responsible for his parent’s deaths and his only goal is to find their killer. I felt for this guy who was forced to grow up quickly and put so much pressure and guilt on his shoulders. He also feels it’s his duty to marry a woman with standing, such as Penelope, and still plans to even when he starts falling for Artemis.
Where the book lacked for me was the romance. I did like Artemis and the balance she brought into Maximus’s life. She doesn’t bend to his will, she stands up to him and she understands what drives him when he goes out into the night as the Ghost. I just don’t know that I bought into their romance. Yes, they have some scenes together that are sexy-hot and sexy-sweet, but there was no romance, no woo’ing, no chemistry even that came across on page. It was a bit disappointing because while I really enjoyed Artemis and Maximus individually, they just lacked sparks together on page.
As in previous books, I’m still so taken with Phoebe, Maximus’s near blind sister, I need more. I really, really hope that she finds her own happy ending…maybe in a novella Elizabeth Hoyt? Please?! This supporting character is a scene stealer for me for the simple reason that she’s a sweetheart and always seems so upbeat even having been dealt a bad blow in life. She deserves happiness and a sweet man to love her and I want to see it happen!
I would recommend reading this story for Artemis. She’s an all-around wonderful heroine and I was taken with her from the beginning. Yes, I was disappointed with the romance, it was just lacking for me and I needed more time between the two characters that didn’t involve their personal agendas or them in bed. Even though the Duke of Midnight might not be my favorite read in the Maiden Lane series, the series as a whole still remains one of my favorites and one that I’ll continue to recommend as a must read.

Just love Hoyt. She needs to write these forever and ever and ever. Love the duke, and omg Artemis is awesommeee.
3 stars for artemis bc she fcking carried this book.
artemis deserves better. maximus irritated me throughout the book. he's hellbent on making artemis his mistress and marrying her cousin instead bc she's more eligible and artemis comes from a family with a bad reputation and he couldnt have that bc he's a fcking duke. his reputation matters more 💀 i hated it more that he only decided to fight for her when she's literally dying in front of him 💀
he's the only ghost i hate. what a fcking selfish bastard. i mean he only became the ghost for his own reasons unlike winter and godric.

Listened to the audiobook, which was lovely, amazing and wonderful! Highly recommend!
A Georgian Batman and Goddess of the Hunt. Does it get any better than this? No. Maximus and Artemis are delightful. Especially loved Maximus and his reaction to falling for Artemis.
Rating 4.5 Stars
A bit of pride and a bit of madness set this book apart. Maximus is a tragic hero out for revenge of his parents and driven to live up to his title. Artemis is dependent on family after losing her parents and her twin brother Apollo to Bedlam. All of this dynamic and society standards comes to stand in the way of an infatuation that develops in to love. A very good read that I could not put down.
